Politicians Dawdle On Student Loan Programs In 2012

Initiatives put forward by the Obama Administration that are aimed at allowing consolidation of federal loans and making the income-based repayment program more attractive may wind up being more limited than first thought.

College loan borrowers who took out student loans before 2008 are exempt. These people, however, are the ones who are suffering the most from heavy loan debt and need relief.

There is a summary with angry comments from those affected at blogs on the nytimes.com website. Check out the feedback here: http://thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/26/student-loan/

Here is one commenter's response:

This is in the right direction, but wish it could go further. Forgiveness if you work in an low income area, forgiveness if you join the military, forgiveness if you work in certain needed professions – which are low paying.

Well, these programs ARE available.

Here's a free list of student loan forgiveness programs.

More information on the Obama student loan forgiveness proposals give preliminary information. Solid information, sadly, is still lacking three months after the proposals were announced. It's a shame that politicians are still playing games with the lives of people who are struggling to get out from under the burden of their student loans.
